And Crocodiles Are Hungry At Night - a memoir by Jack Mapanje

 Date: Thu 8 December 2011

Malawian-born poet, university lecturer and former Amnesty prisoner of conscience Jack Mapanje launches his memoir in conversation with renowned author Gillian Slovo, President of English PEN.

This special event will be co-hosted by Amnesty International, English PEN and and Ayebia Clarke Publishing Ltd, with Amnesty UK's director Kate Allen giving the opening address.

Mapanje's memoir chronicles his arrest and imprisonment without charge in Malawi during the tenure of the country’s former Life President Banda. His incarceration generated huge public outcry and protests from leaders and organisations around the world, including Amnesty International and PEN. Mapanje's powerful and beautifully written book is a forceful indictment of corrupt government and its capacity to wreck lives and whole societies.

The event takes place two days before international Human Rights Day. It also celebrates the 20th anniversary of Jack Mapanje’s release from prison, the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International and the 90th anniversary of English PEN.

This event is free but booking is essential.
